Happy New Year! I have blogged for almost three day. Well, it is a long time for me. Okay, What do you get for the New Year’s gift? I found many people begin to blog for their gifts, many photos and video about festival come out recently. They are all look so beautiful. At Becky's buttons blog, I found a vintage deer cake topper. There are 5 cute mini deer on the cake with some confection. Looks so delicious. This festive cake was devoured at her brother's house this year. It's a banana, chocolate chip cake, recipe courtesy of her dear Mom mom Betty. Does anyone know the recipe of this cake? I want to try for it. Looks so great!

Pumpkin Wedding Cake Toppers

I promise you never saw such a cute Pumpkin wedding cake topper. The most common Pumpkin cake toppers are 3D edition, but these are a little special. Plate ones, interesting? I think they are made by the same material as monogram cake toppers such as beads or Swarovski crystal. And this custom cake topper was for a couple getting married in a pumpkin patch on Halloween. What a great Creativity It was the brides idea to give ‘her’ pumpkin some lipstick.

A Bug's Life Cake Topper

Have you ever watch the movie a a bug's life? It is one of my favorite cartoon movie which is a 1998 American CGI film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution in the United States on November 25, 1998. The story tell an oddball individualist ant who hires what he thinks are "warrior bugs" — actually circus performers — to fight off greedy grasshoppers and finally beat these grasshoppers. Now I am so happy to find out one cake topper representing the character of a bug's life. These a bug's life figurines are made of PVC and about measure about 3" tall. I think another collection of a bug's life cake toppers will add to my showcase soon.

This started as a joke and ended up being one of my favorites. I first started this topper for a local show I was invited to attend, I made it thinking it would make people chuckle and move on but instead everyone loved it. The parasol is covered in silver German glass glitter. The couple sits underneath it. white strung pearls represent the raindrops The arbor above them is a combination of rose petals and english boxwood accented with light blue and grey hydrangea leaves. A grey ribbon is woven around it with pink silk Midori ribbon trailing at both sides. I have wrestled with ideas for my cake topper for a long time.My first idea is trying a ambitious project to create papier mache newspaper birds, but um ... I don’t think that'll happen. I barely clean my house, much less make papier mache anything. Then I thought I'd use an ampersand, as a nod to our typography/journalism theme and also to signify that we're now joined. But that all went to hell when I spotted this handsome fella and pretty gal on top of a shelf on my way out of a small craft shop passed by.

His hair is a little chipped and her birdcage veil is a little ripped with yellow flowers background. But it is still a great keepsake and memory, after 60 years. And they only set me back 28!

Deer Cake Toppers

These deer cake toppers are made by Tara. They decided to do something special for Thanksgiving this year. So sushi come out with all people’s agreement, through she wasn’t quite sure she could survive her first Thanksgiving without multiple serving of Green Bean Casserole.

After the whole day preparing, decorating cooking and baking, the food looked lovely. She thought to make pumpkin pie, but went for vegan chocolate cupcake instead to complete non-traditional theme. And that was why these cake toppers came out. Leaving these cupcake bald really didn’t match their unique theme, so they put these cake toppers with mushrooms, grass and deer! It looked so cute and lovely.

Shepherd's Pie AKA Hunting Rancher's Pie

I was looking for something new to do with our ground beef (we have a lot in the freezer right now), and was paging through the new (Feb. 2010) Martha Stewart Living when I ran across her recipe for Shepherd's Pie. I was intrigued by the use of parsnips and yogurt in the mashed potato topping, but not by the ground turkey or the weird chili powder in the filling. (chili powder? in shepherd's pie??) Not that I've ever had shepherd's pie, but chili powder just doesn't sound right to me.

I pulled out my American Classics cookbook, written by the editors of Cook's Illustrated magazine. You know, the people who test the daylights out of recipes to come up with the "Best" way to make them? So they suggested using diced lamb shoulder chops for the best flavor, which is probably true, but I've got ground beef. If I remember today I'll check the freezer in town for some lamb to add to the beef.

Then I remembered Shell's Shepherd Pie recipe that she posted back in November. It looks quite similar to the American Classics recipe, except doesn't call for wine. I like wine. The measurements are almost identical, but Shell's also adds corn. I like corn, too.

So this is what I decided. I'm going to use ground beef, and maybe some lamb. I'm going to use the Martha's topping and Shell's/American Classic's filling, with wine and Shell's corn. I won't even have to go to the store for this!

I think it will be the Best of Three Worlds. I guess we'll see. It doesn't sound very fast, but I'm still making it on a weeknight.



I couldn't find lamb in the town freezer, but I did grab a package of ground elk. Should be interesting. And delicious!

Okay. Had there not been excitement on the way home and subsequent emailing and reporting, I would have started this dish much earlier. Oh well. You can't eat on time every night, right?

I didn't really end up following any of the three recipes, except for ingredient lists, so we'll see how this goes. It's such a mishmash of ingredients and techniques and amounts, I believe I've changed more than enough to take credit for it now! It is smelling and looking delicious...but dinner was served almost an hour late. I could have left it in the oven for 5 more minutes to get just a bit more golden, but we were hungry!


And it IS delicious! I really like how it turned out, and ate too much. Number One and H-Bomb liked it too. Sawed Off wasn't really into eating tonight, but I'm sure he would have liked it, if he had tasted it. I guess technically with the elk and beef it should be called more of a Hunter's Pie or a Ranching Hunter's Pie, a Hunting Rancher's Pie? What do you think?


Min's Shepherd Pie
Inspired by Martha Stewart, American Classics, Shell & Alton Brown!

For the topping:
1 1/2 pounds potatoes, cleaned and cut into 1-inch pieces (I don't peel potatoes)
3 parsnips (6 ounces), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 cup plain yogurt
salt and freshly ground pepper

For the filling:
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground elk (or lamb)
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 medium onions, chopped coarse
2 medium carrots, cut into 1/4-inch slices
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 1/4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1/4 cup full-bodied red wine
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon thyme leaves (dried, or chopped if fresh)
1 teaspoon rosemary (dried, or chopped if fresh)
1 cup peas (I used canned, drained; if frozen, thaw first)
1 cup corn (I used canned, drained; if frozen, thaw)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Make the topping: Place potatoes and parsnips in a medium saucepan, cover with water by 2 inches, and bring to a simmer. Cook until fork tender, about 20 minutes. Drain, return to saucepan, add yogurt and 3/4 teaspoon salt. Mash and mix together; season with pepper.

Make the filling: Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Add meat and start cooking. Add onions and carrots, cook until vegetables are softened and meat is browned. Add garlic, flour and tomato paste and cook until the garlic is fragrant, about 1 minute.

Add the broth, wine and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until some of the liquid has been absorbed.

Remove from heat. Stir peas, corn, thyme and rosemary into meat mixture and check the seasonings. Pour the meat mixture evenly into a 2 1/2-quart casserole dish. With a large spoon, place the potato topping over the entire filling. Starting at the sides to ensure a tight seal, use a rubber spatula or a spoon to smooth out the potatoes and anchor them to the sides of the baking dish. (you should not see any filling).

Bake until the top turns golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Let rest for 5 to 10 minutes and serve.

Floral Cake Toppers

I found these floral cake toppers here. She made these for a friend's upcoming wedding. Her friend’s colors are eggplant purple, sage green and ivory and it's a garden wedding theme. Her friend is pretty particular about what she likes and she does NOT like the 'cheesy' cake toppers. This topper is going to be on a small cake that's going on top of a cupcake stand. It's not don't yet, but you can see where it's headed.

Finally she had some cute little memory boxes on hand would be a good thing and a coworker of my husband's is having a baby girl. That's what prompted this little box. She put polka dotted ribbon on the bottom but until now she didn’t make up her mind whether to paint the top edge with a pink stripe. All her art works look fabulous, but I still don’t work what are these flowers made of? Kind of fabric or clay? It looks like such stuff in the images, but I am not so sure. HAHA. Waiting for her further project, I love them.

This wedding cake and cake topper are full of traditional Chinese taste. Notice the color? It is red in most of part. Red means a lot in China such as richness, happiness and health... Snowmen Cake Toppers

Today I will focus on snowmen cake toppers. I love snowmen very much. If you want to know why, it is hard to say. Maybe it is just my favorite tradition or maybe it is just because I like watching Frosty the snowman at my grandparents home when I were little.My Mom mom would make us root beer floats and pepperoni and cheese crackers and we would watch Frosty with our grandparents.It was always amazing..
Till this day my love of snowmen is still warm. These vintage cake toppers was bought last year and had to make faux cupcakes with Frosty and Wendy on top. I will always take it as a great treasure in all my memories. Every time I look at them it takes me back in time...I can smell the root beer and taste the ice cream,and picture my brother and I cuddled up watching Frosty.

Train Cake Toppers

Usually the most interesting cake toppers are not bought from the retail store, they are handmade by skilled and creative craftsman. Right here, the train cake topper is designed and made by Melanie. Actually, this is a cake topper asked by her coworkers. They had tickets to ride on a train, so she wanted the cake to reflect that.

The first idea coming out is The Little Engine That Could. And then the second is Thomas the Tank Engine. But she has to give up the two idea, since both of them won’t work for a grown man who wants a grown-up train. Finally she decided to hand-cut the train out of black fondant and just stuck it on the side of the cake with a little water.

For the cake topper, she made one of those old-fashioned wooden train whistles out of marbleized brown fondant and a yellow banner that read "Happy Birthday."

Phew, you know making a train cake topper for a man is really not easy. It should be masculine, handsome, and not childish or girlish, that turn to be a great challenge. But take a look at above images, it look nice. right?

She scoured Michaels at least once a week looking for the perfect Mr. and Mrs. Rainbow peeps. After too many hours in Michaels for the second time that week, she found them. Her two perfect birdies, matching her wedding colors, just waiting for her to take them home and jazz them up!

From Miss Rainbow’s experience, making such a bird cake topper isn’t too hard. (Wow, for me it must be Mission Impossible). So maybe she will post some tutorial, as her said, it was just a few craft supplies and a whole heap of hot glue. It’s basically idiot proof, minus a couple of finger burns.

Little Buddy Cake Toppers

Wow, this little buddy cake topper is my favorite cake toppers today. I find it at Amy Walsh’ blog. First I love the shape and color. Second and maybe the most important part is the background. All elements inosculate perfectly, I love the flower in bride’ hand and the plant in their back( Although I can’t figure out what it is lol) . Oh, do I mention that this little buddy cake topper is a DIY’s item. Her hand must be quite dexterity.

Indian Wedding Cake Toppers and Irish Wedding Cake Toppers

I found two artwork by celebrationcaketoppers. Well, one is Irish theme wedding cake topper, another is Indian theme wedding cake topper. It is hard to believe how details they are in. And all of them are made of fimo clay and sculpt to match the wedding couple’s outfit, from the tip of your toes to the top of your head, no detail is left out, no matter how small!

This bride and groom was her third Indian bride and groom, and she would be to keep the cake topper showing at the last minute of the wedding to surprise couples.

I have never seen any cake topper is in such a great detail and meaning… Here Member Edi Rosado's Nativity cake topper is a sweet reminder of the reason for the season. The figurine cake toppers of Mary and Jesus are totally edible and made by hand.

Baby Piggy Cake Toppers

I found this at Minnie’s blog, a woman who love to bake and make beautiful things out of food. I was laughing when I just saw it, it is really funny and the maker share the whole process of making it.

Oink Oink Oink, it's a baby piggy! It was supposed to be a baby bunny, but I didn't get the ears right, so it turned into a piggy, after substantial modifications.

Well, it seems to be an unexpected project. lol Also about the outfit of this baby piggy cake topper, I think it is also interesting.

It is wearing, as my teacher calls it, a "European" diaper.. you know the ones with cloth and pins? I might put a bow on it and call it a girl, who knows, I'll save that for a rainy day..
